SJP Episode #040 with Nichole Nordeman Enjoying the Everyday Moments of Motherhood

Simply Joyful Podcast — Nichole Nordeman: Enjoying the Everyday Moments of Motherhood

I am ridiculously excited about today's guest, Nichole Nordeman! I have been a huge fan of Nichole's for as long as she has been making music. She is a Christian recording artist, songwriter, has had several number one and top ten singles — and she's won nine Dove awards!

Nichole's talent for songwriting has long impressed me. Her lyrics always touch my heart in a special way. It makes sense that her new book, Slow Down, is so wonderfully written. Now, if only the audio version was of her singing it. Ha!

Her book is filled with real-life motherhood. I love the stories she shares within the pages and the perspective she has now that her kids are a bit older. One interesting thing she did was to have guests write sweet, little blurbs about motherhood. I think I’m going to make this book my new baby shower gift for new moms. It’s so great.

It was fun to chat about her background, how she got started, life as a single mom, and what’s happening in her life today. Such a special episode to get to record! I had so much fun getting to know Nichole.

I'm really excited for you guys to listen in to my conversation with Nichole! Get ready to be encouraged!

Listen Here:

Highlights from the Show:

  • Let's just pretend that Nichole started singing when she was 10 — and I started listening to her when I was the same age. Ha! I almost couldn't believe that Nichole has been singing and writing songs for 20 years!
  • So many of her songs have really impacted me on this journey of life—I really feel like Nichole has literally walked through life with me. {Legacy, Real Me, Seasons…so many favorites!}
  • Nichole shares why writing is more important to Nichole than singing (see her quote above).
  • Nichole truly grew up as a singer—she was raised around music.
  • Nichole reveals the favorite song that she's written (the answer may not be what you think!)
  • There is such a neat story behind why Nichole decided to write Slow Down (the song). It was for her son's 5th-grade graduation — and the video she made with friends and the words from the song ended up going viral.
  • I loved hearing about how her son colored all over her very special keyboard — and his sweet, innocent reason.
  • Nichole's debut book is about motherhood. She shares about what Influenced of Slow Down (the book).
  • We talked about why we think women are so hard on ourselves and battle the belief that we have to have it all together.
  • Nichole did something really unique in her book and had special contributors share some motherhood moments. You'll probably recognize several of her friends.
  • The baby years are never easy, but Nichole's first born was a really difficult baby.
  • I asked Nichole to tell one of my favorite stories from her book. It was a moment when she and the kids had gotten stuck outside during a big storm.
  • We often project our own emotions on our kids. We expect them to feel the same way we do…like how Nichole was panicked during the storm.
  • Nichole talks a bit about the adjustment to becoming a single mom.
  • Nichole talked about being able to sing and record Slow Down with her seven-year-old daughter Pepper—you guys have to listen to this song! I dare you not to cry! It takes on a different meaning when her daughter sings with her. SO GOOD!!
  • Confession: I totally goofed when I mentioned the cute little Shepherd on the “Search” in this episode. I said on the shelf (like the elf). Oops!
